Club President Rae McLeod urged district Rotarians to book training sessions to improve online skills and generate a payment to Rotary. More

Avoiding the emerging digital economy is part of a multidimensional problem in Australian business practice. The latest ABS release on Business Use of Technology underscores an issue for Australian businesses- most businesses in sectors that directly service consumers, do not engage with them in an online format. Take the Ballarat and Central Highland's retail sector as an example. High shop vacancy rates indicate price, customer service, product mix and that all-consuming investment in bricks and mortar, is no longer sufficient for retail success. Access to reliable high-speed broadband with the roll-out of next generation technology may remove one barrier to uptake of digital enterprise but it will take more than upgraded infrastructure to get retailers and small businesses in general taking advantage of online opportunities. University of Ballarat's Centre for eCommerce and Communications is celebrating the progress of the Central Highlands Digital Enterprise project. Delivery of free training and individual mentoring for businesses and community groups commenced in September 2012. The project focusses on getting businesses and not-for-profits ready for next generation broadband technology. Love is not Lost on Business - 14 May 2013

It seems that Ballarat businesses will be seeking 'love' not on the internet but face-to-face next week. Local businesses have been invited to participate in a structured networking event designed to match goods and services to local business needs. It's a free event called 'Speed Dating for Ballarat Bizness'. The event outcomes are aimed at increasing profits, retaining more business locally, and stemming trade leakage. Bookings for the event indicate that businesses are keen to join in and be matched up. To be held at the North Ballarat Sports Club on Wednesday evening 22nd May 2013, participants bring business cards and exchange information on goods and services so that business relationships can be built. It kicks-off with a Micro NBN EXPO at 5:00pm, followed by matchmaking from 6:30 to 8:30pm. More
